Dittos For Kiddos began in Florence, Alabama in 1996 by Jolie Lauderdale and Melanie Harrison. Our aunt from Nashville had given us the idea of starting a children’s seasonal consignment sale. The article from The Tennessean that she sent was describing a business that we knew we could manage in our spare time and still keep our day jobs.
When we sat down and put our ideas together for this business, we decided that we needed to be different from other consignment sales. We try our best to look at each item brought in. We look at all the clothes and reject those items that are stained, worn, or even no longer in style. We even spend a couple of days before each sale culling items that we should not have accepted.
Our first sale brought in about 60 consignors. Today we have well over 800 consignors and each sale gets bigger and better. There are many moms that participated in our sale in 1996 and continue to consign with us today.
We had our first sale in a small 4000 square foot building in Florence and because the business grew each sale, we were constantly looking for a bigger building that would also provide plenty of parking space. We have now settled into the North Alabama State Fairgrounds in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. We feel we are centrally located for our consignors who come from Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
The marketing process we use brings in customers from all over the south. Our flyers are mailed to thousands of homes and our ads are placed in over 20 different newspapers and advertising mail-outs. Our cheapest method of advertising is word of mouth. If you like our sale, tell someone about it.
